Can you use AI to write a book and publish it on Amazon? Yes, but Amazon wants to know about it, and the rules depend on how you used AI.
If you’re an expert or business leader writing a book to build your authority, this matters for more than compliance. It affects whether you own your book and whether readers trust it.
Here’s what Amazon KDP requires in 2026, in plain language.
The Short Answer
- AI-generated content (text, images or translations created by AI) must be disclosed to KDP
- AI-assisted content (your own work, edited or refined with AI tools) does not need to be disclosed
- Editing AI-generated text heavily afterward does not change it into AI-assisted content
What Amazon Counts as AI-Generated
In its content guidelines, KDP defines AI-generated content as text, images or translations created by an AI-based tool. That applies even if you substantially edited the result afterward.
You must tell KDP when your book contains AI-generated content. You do this when you publish a new book, or when you edit and republish an existing one.
Examples that count as AI-generated:
- Chapters or sections drafted by a chatbot from a prompt
- A cover or interior illustrations made with an AI image tool
- A translation of your book produced by AI
What Counts as AI-Assisted
If you wrote the content yourself and used AI to edit, refine, error-check or improve it, KDP considers that AI-assisted. Using AI to brainstorm ideas also counts as AI-assisted, as long as you wrote the text or created the images yourself.
KDP says you don’t need to disclose AI-assisted content. You are still responsible for making sure it meets every content guideline, including intellectual property rules.
Your takeaway: The question isn’t “Did I use AI?” It’s “Who created this content, me or the tool?” If the tool created it, disclose it.
Amazon Also Limits How Many Books You Can Upload
To slow the flood of mass-produced books, KDP limits how many new titles an account can create each day. KDP confirmed a limit of three titles per day to the Authors Guild and said the limit may be adjusted. Most authors will never come close to it, but it shows where Amazon is heading.
The Bigger Risk: Owning Your Book
Disclosure is only one part of the picture. In the US, the Copyright Office has said that material generated entirely by AI isn’t protected by copyright. Only the parts a human author creates or meaningfully shapes can be.
For an expert, your book is an asset. It supports your speaking, consulting and reputation. If a large part of it was written by a tool, you may not fully own what you’re building your brand on.
Your takeaway: This is general information, not legal advice. If ownership matters to your business, talk to an intellectual property lawyer before you publish AI-generated material.
Why Readers Still Want a Human Voice
People buy a book from an expert to get that expert’s thinking: the stories, the hard-won lessons and the point of view nobody else has. AI can produce generic advice in seconds. It can’t produce your experience.
That’s why every book we publish is human-made. Our editors, designers and formatters work on every page, and no AI is used to write or design your book.
A Quick Checklist Before You Upload
- List every place AI touched your book: drafting, editing, cover, images, translation.
- Mark each one as AI-generated (the tool created it) or AI-assisted (you created it, the tool helped).
- Disclose all AI-generated text, images and translations when you publish on KDP.
- Check that you have the rights to everything in the book, including images.
- If anyone else worked on your book, ask them directly whether they used AI.

FAQs: AI and Amazon KDP
Does using Grammarly or AI spell-check need to be disclosed?
Under KDP’s definitions, using a tool to edit or error-check writing you created yourself is AI-assisted, which doesn’t need to be disclosed.
Do I have to disclose an AI-generated cover?
Yes. KDP’s definition of AI-generated content includes images, so an AI-generated cover or illustration must be disclosed.
Will readers see that my book used AI?
KDP’s guidelines describe disclosure to Amazon. Amazon’s policies can change, so check the current KDP help pages before you publish.
Does The Publishing Pad use AI?
