How Much Does It Cost to Self-Publish a Book in 2026?

Uploading a book to Amazon is free. Publishing a book that sells is not.

Most self-published authors spend somewhere between a few hundred and several thousand dollars. Where you land depends on three things: how much editing your manuscript needs, how much of the work you do yourself and how seriously you plan to market the book.

Here’s what each part costs in 2026, what you can safely do for free and where cutting corners costs you sales.

The Short Answer

  • Uploading to Amazon KDP: free
  • A typical professional self-publishing budget: about US$2,940 to US$5,660, according to Reedsy’s 2026 data
  • The biggest variable: editing, which is priced by word count

What’s Free When You Self-Publish

A few parts of self-publishing cost nothing:

  • Publishing on Amazon KDP. Creating an account and uploading your eBook and paperback is free. Amazon takes its share from each sale instead.
  • An IngramSpark account. IngramSpark distributes to bookstores and libraries, and creating an account is free.
  • ISBNs in Canada. Canadian publishers get ISBNs free through Library and Archives Canada.

Everything else is a service: editing, design, formatting and marketing. That’s where your budget goes.

The Real Costs, Line by Line

1. Editing

Editing is usually the largest cost, because it’s priced by word count. There are four levels, and not every book needs all of them:

  • Developmental editing fixes structure, flow and missing pieces.
  • Line editing improves sentence-level clarity and readability.
  • Copy editing corrects grammar, consistency and accuracy.
  • Proofreading is the final check before publication.

For an 80,000-word book, Reedsy reports average quotes of about US$2,880 for developmental editing, US$2,160 for copy editing and US$1,600 for proofreading.

Your takeaway: Don’t skip editing to save money. Readers notice errors, and reviews mention them. If your budget is tight, get an expert to tell you which level your manuscript actually needs.

2. Cover Design

Reedsy reports a median of about US$930 for a professional cover, with more than half of projects between US$630 and US$1,200. Prices vary by genre and by whether you need an eBook cover only or a full paperback and hardcover wrap.

Your takeaway: Your cover is your first sales tool. On Amazon, it appears as a thumbnail next to competing books, so it has to work at small sizes and match what readers expect in your category.

3. Interior Formatting

Formatting turns your manuscript into a print-ready file and an eBook file. Reedsy puts the average professional cost at about US$800. Text-only books can be formatted with free tools. Books with images, tables, workbooks or complex layouts usually need a professional.

4. ISBNs

Each format of your book (paperback, hardcover, audiobook) needs its own ISBN. In the US, Bowker currently charges US$125 for one ISBN or US$295 for ten. Canadian authors get them free.

Your takeaway: If you plan more than one format, the 10-pack is better value. Also check who is listed as the publisher on your ISBN. That should be you or the company you hired, never someone you can’t contact.

5. Launch and Marketing

This is the cost most authors forget, and it decides whether anyone finds the book. It includes your Amazon book description, keywords and categories, an early reader team, launch planning and ongoing promotion. Reedsy’s figures range from about US$60 for basic tools to US$1,500 for hired services.

6. Author Website

A website gives readers, media and event organizers one place to find you and your book. You can build a simple site yourself for a small yearly fee, or have one built for you. Our author websites start at US$699.

Example Budget: A 60,000-Word Nonfiction Book

Here’s what editing alone would cost for a 60,000-word manuscript at our published per-word rates:

  • Developmental editing at US$0.075 per word: US$4,500
  • Line editing at US$0.04 per word: US$2,400
  • Copy editing at US$0.04 per word: US$2,400
  • Proofreading at US$0.025 per word: US$1,500

Most manuscripts don’t need all four. A well-structured draft might need only copy editing and proofreading (US$3,900 for 60,000 words). Try our editing cost calculator with your own word count.

DIY, Freelancers or a Publishing Partner?

There are three ways to self-publish, and each one trades money for time:

  • Do it yourself. Lowest cost, highest time commitment. Works best if you have design and publishing experience.
  • Hire separate freelancers. You choose each editor and designer, but you manage the project, the timeline and the handoffs.
  • Work with a publishing partner. One team handles editing, design, formatting, setup and launch. You pay more upfront and save the time and the learning curve.

Whichever route you choose, check three things before you pay anyone: who owns the KDP account, who owns the ISBNs and who receives your royalties.

FAQs: The Cost of Self-Publishing

Can I self-publish a book for free?

Technically, yes. Amazon KDP charges nothing to publish. But a free book usually means no professional editing, cover or launch plan, and that shows in sales and reviews.

What’s the most important thing to spend money on?

Editing and the cover. Editing decides whether readers finish and recommend your book. The cover decides whether they click on it in the first place.

How long does it take to self-publish a book?

It depends on how much editing your manuscript needs. Plan for several months from finished draft to launch, and leave time for early readers before launch day.

Do I need an ISBN for Amazon?

Not for an eBook. For a paperback, Amazon offers a free ISBN, but Amazon is then listed as the publisher, and that ISBN only works with KDP. If you want bookstore and library distribution, use your own ISBN.
